REHAU PEX-a: What It Actually Is, and Why It's What We Repipe Baldwin County Houses In
PEX-a, PEX-b and PEX-c are not grades of the same thing — they are three different manufacturing processes producing three different materials. What separates them, what REHAU's system does, and why a slab-house repipe here goes overhead.

PEX-a, PEX-b and PEX-c are not good, better and best. They are three different chemical processes for turning polyethylene into crosslinked polyethylene, they produce genuinely different materials, and the difference shows up in how the pipe behaves in a finished house rather than in a spec sheet. What crosslinking is, in one paragraph
Ordinary polyethylene is a tangle of separate molecular chains. Crosslinking bonds those chains to each other, which is what turns a material that creeps under heat and pressure into one that can carry hot water at pressure for decades. Every PEX is polyethylene that has been crosslinked. The three types differ in when and how.
PEX-a is crosslinked with peroxide during extrusion, while the material is still molten — the Engel method, named for the German engineer Thomas Engel who developed it in 1967. Because the crosslinking happens in the melt, it happens uniformly, and PEX-a carries the highest degree of crosslinking of the three types.
PEX-b is crosslinked with silane after extrusion and cured with moisture. PEX-c is crosslinked by electron-beam irradiation after extrusion.
All three meet ASTM F876, the tubing specification, and all three are legitimate. The practical consequence of doing it in the melt is a property called thermal memory: PEX-a wants to return to its extruded shape. A kink can be relaxed out with a heat gun instead of cut out, and — more usefully — the pipe can be expanded, slipped over a fitting, and left to shrink back down onto it.
What REHAU's system does
RAUPEX is manufactured by REHAU's high-pressure peroxide method — the Engel process, PEX-a. The pipe is stated to meet or exceed ASTM F876 and F877, CSA B137.5 and PPI TR-3, and is certified to NSF Standards 14 and 61, which are the drinking-water certifications rather than the pressure ones.
The connection is where the system differs from a crimp-ring PEX installation. An EVERLOC+ connection is made with a power tool in a two-step expansion-and-compression sequence, and the fittings carry four sealing edges. The system is certified to ASTM F877. What that means in a house is that the connection is formed rather than squeezed, and there is no external ring holding it together against the pipe's will.
None of that makes the material magic. It makes it predictable, which is what you want in something you are burying in a wall and then painting over.
Why does a slab-house repipe go up instead of down?
This is the part that surprises people, and it is the reason a repipe often beats another round of concrete work.
A house built on a slab has its original supply lines run under or through the concrete. Once that concrete is poured, those lines are effectively permanent — you can open the slab to reach one, but you cannot practically re-run it along the same path. So a repipe generally abandons the under-slab distribution entirely. New lines go up into the attic, across, and down inside the walls to each fixture, and the old buried run is simply left in place, out of service.
That converts a jackhammer problem into an access problem. Drywall openings, patched afterwards. It is disruptive in a completely different and more predictable way — and it is the structural reason the repipe conversation tends to arrive after a slab has been opened more than once rather than before.
The Baldwin County wrinkle: overhead means attic
Routing supply overhead solves the concrete problem and inherits a different one. An attic in this county is not conditioned space — it is outside air with a roof over it — and that puts the new distribution in the coldest part of the building for a handful of nights each winter.
Loxley is the sharpest illustration of that on our map, and it is counterintuitive twice over. And in calendar year 2025 the Loxley coordinate recorded the highest days at or below 28°F of the 21 communities Streamlined Plumbing serves with usable climate data. The newest houses along the I-10 corridor and the Hwy 59 corridor sit in the coldest measured spot we cover, in the year measured.
That is one year of per-coordinate reanalysis rather than a climate normal, so read it as a shape and not a forecast. But it is why an overhead repipe here gets insulated as part of the work rather than as an afterthought, and why the freeze prep page is worth reading before December regardless of what your pipe is made of.
PEX is more forgiving of ice than rigid copper because it has somewhere to go under pressure. It is not freeze-proof, no manufacturer claims it is, and the brass and the valves in the same system have no give whatsoever.
What a repipe does not fix
Worth saying plainly, because a repipe gets sold as a cure for things it has nothing to do with.
It replaces supply piping. It does not touch drains, and a house with failing cast iron drains and brand-new PEX supply still has failing drains. It does not raise water pressure that is low because of a pressure-reducing valve or a partially closed shutoff — those are cheaper problems and worth ruling out first. And it does not change your water chemistry, which is a separate question with a separate answer.
A single leak in otherwise sound pipe is a repair, and that is ordinary water line repair work. Damp with no visible source is leak detection work.
