An apprentice submits a registration packet with photo identification and a fee. There is no exam at this stage, because the certificate is not the state saying this person knows the trade — it is the state saying it knows who this person is. The board's supervision rule does the real work instead. An apprentice may perform plumbing work only under the direct supervision of a certified journeyman or master, and that supervisor has to remain on the job site the entire time the apprentice is working. On residential jobsites one supervisor may cover up to five registered apprentices; on non-residential work the ceiling drops to three. So an apprentice at your property is not a problem in itself. An apprentice at your property alone is.
Journeyman Plumber
Two years registered as an apprentice, then a board examination.
This is where a test first appears. Before the board will let anyone sit the journeyman examination, they must have spent at least two years registered as an apprentice, or completed a board-approved apprenticeship program. Passing converts a person from somebody who has to be watched into somebody who can do the work and watch others do it. Master Plumber
A current journeyman certificate held for at least a year, then a second examination.
A master certificate is not a journeyman certificate with more mileage on it. It requires holding a current journeyman certification for a minimum of one year first, and then passing a separate examination the board sets and scores. What it adds is legal responsibility for other people. Under the board's own rule it is unlawful for a master to supervise or direct anyone performing plumbing work who does not hold current certification. That is the practical difference in one sentence: a journeyman answers for the work in front of him, and a master answers for the work and for who was allowed to touch it.

The board runs a public licensee lookup and it is open to anybody — no account, no fee. Find it at alpgfb.igovsolution.net and choose the individual search. You can search on a license number, a last name, a first name, a county, a certificate type, or a certificate status, and there is a short verification code to fill in before it will run, which is normal and not a sign you have found the wrong page. Put MP-4462 in the number field. You are looking for three things: that the certificate exists at all, that the name attached to it is the name on this website, and that the status reads Active rather than Lapsed or Inactive.
That third field is the one worth caring about, and it is the one people skip. Certificates in Alabama are not permanent — they run on an annual cycle with a renewal window in the autumn, and continuing education has to be finished before a renewal will go through. For the 2026 certification year that window opened on 1 October 2025 and closed on 31 December 2025; anything submitted afterwards is handled as late. A number printed on a business card only proves a certificate was issued at some point in the past. The lookup tells you whether it is good this morning. Alabama certifies gas fitting separately from plumbing. A person can hold one ladder, the other, or both. Brandon holds the plumbing one. Streamlined Plumbing does not hold a gas fitting certificate and does not take gas work.
That has consequences on real jobs and we would rather set them out here than have you meet them on the day. If a job requires connecting, moving or altering a gas line, it needs somebody certified for gas fitting, and the answer you will get from us is that it is outside our certificate rather than a quiet attempt at it. Water heaters are where this surfaces most often. The water connections on any heater are plumbing. A gas-fired unit also has a fuel connection, and that part sits under the gas fitting certificate rather than the plumbing one. Tell us the fuel type when you call and you will get a straight answer about what we can and cannot touch before a truck leaves, which is cheaper for everyone than finding out after one arrives.
None of this is a criticism of gas work or of the people who do it. It is a description of where one certificate stops. A trade license is a boundary as much as a permission, and a contractor who treats it as only a permission is the one to worry about.
