Across the 19 Baldwin County communities on this site that carry a Census place record, the American Community Survey counts 83,098 housing units, 58,775 of them occupied. The midpoint year of construction in those communities runs from 1976 in Bay Minette to 2007 in Loxley — a thirty-one-year spread inside a single county. That spread is the reason a repipe question cannot be answered from a map. Two houses forty minutes apart can sit on opposite sides of every plumbing era there is, and a city-wide midpoint is a midpoint: half the stock in any of these places is older than the figure and half is newer. Treat build era as a question worth asking about your own building, never as an answer about it. Nothing in the public record states what pipe is in a specific wall, and a repipe is the one plumbing job priced by the whole structure, so guessing is the expensive way to start.

What the county record does describe well is the water at source, and it describes something close to the reverse of what most repiping advice assumes. That advice is written around mineral-rich supply — deposit building inside the pipe, flow narrowing, a softener as the standing recommendation. Two United States Geological Survey series for Baldwin County wells point the other way. The hardness series holds 177 measurements: the middle result is 12.0 milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate, which converts to 0.70 grains per gallon, and 87% of the results sit under 60 mg/L, the level the USGS uses to call water soft. The pH series holds 248 measurements with a middle result of 5.90; 79% fall below neutral and two-thirds fall below 6.5, the bottom of the EPA secondary range, with the weakest single reading at 4.1 and the strongest at 9.2. Low mineral content and a reading under neutral is a demanding pairing for metal pipe, and it means a guide written for the mineral-rich case is solving a problem this county's source data does not describe.

Both series are drawn from wells. They describe raw groundwater before anything is done to it, not what arrives at a tap, and that distinction sorts the county into two halves. Twelve of the 22 communities — Daphne, Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Foley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Robertsdale, Bay Minette, Loxley, Silverhill, Summerdale and Elberta — appear in the EPA record with at least one active registered community water system, fifteen systems between them. Those utilities carry a corrosion-control duty under the federal Lead and Copper Rule, so for those addresses the well figures are background on the aquifer and nothing stronger than that. The other ten communities have no registered community system in the record at all, which means water moves from the ground to the fixture with no treatment step in between. One further wrinkle: the Spanish Fort system is recorded as surface-sourced rather than groundwater, so on Spanish Fort addresses a well-sample series is simply the wrong reference document.

The spread matters as much as the middle. That same hardness series runs from 0.0 to 990.0 mg/L, and 13 results in every 100 came back above the soft threshold — one of them far above it. So the honest sentence is that the county's typical raw groundwater is soft and acidic, and that yours might not be. On a property drawing from its own well, a water test is worth ordering before anything is specified; it costs a small fraction of the work it informs and it turns a county statistic into a fact about your address. On a utility address, ask the provider for the finished-water figures instead — the treated number is the one your plumbing actually sees.   • Silverhill

  • Why REHAU PEX-a instead of copper or standard PEX?
    PEX-a is the most flexible, durable form of PEX — it resists kinks, tolerates temperature swings, has fewer joints (so fewer places to leak), and doesn't corrode or pit the way copper and galvanized do. REHAU is a proven PEX-a system. For a modern repipe in our climate and water, it's a strong, long-lasting choice.
  • Do you have to tear open every wall?
    No. A repipe involves targeted access points to route the new pipe, not gutting the house. We plan the runs to minimize how much wall we open, and we restore the access points when we're done. It's a real project, but a well-planned repipe is far less invasive than people expect.
  • How do I know if I need a full repipe or just a repair?
    One leak in otherwise sound pipe is a repair, full stop. A repipe is for when the pipe itself is failing — multiple leaks, corroding galvanized, rusty water, pinholes in aging copper. We assess honestly and will tell you when a repair is all you need. We don't sell repipes to homes that don't need them.
  • Will a repipe fix my rusty water and low pressure?
