• Why is polybutylene flagged as high risk?

  Polybutylene is the gray or blue plastic supply pipe installed in roughly 10 million U.S. homes from about 1978 to 1995, before a landmark class-action settlement pulled it from the market. It grows brittle and can crack without warning, its usual life is only 10–15 years, and many insurers now refuse to cover homes that still have it. The industry recommendation is a full replacement rather than waiting for the failure — so if your home is in that window, it's worth confirming the material.
• How long do the different pipe materials last?

  Typical industry-consensus ranges: galvanized steel 20–50 years (often failing at 40–50 and causing rusty water and low pressure); copper 50–70+ years; CPVC 50–75 years; PEX about 25–50 years (roughly 40 typical); and polybutylene only 10–15 years, with replacement strongly recommended. • Why does Streamlined install PEX instead of copper?

  For most whole-home repipes, PEX gives you the same reliable water service for typically 30–40% less than copper, installs faster with fewer joints (each joint is a potential leak point), and tolerates our Gulf Coast conditions well. We use REHAU PEX-a specifically. Copper still has its place, and we'll give you the honest trade-offs for your home rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
• When does a repipe make more sense than another patch?
